Review of The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers

Hello Readers,

Thank you to Tyndale House for generously supplying me with a review copy of The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Francine Rivers is an author that congers up memories of college for me. I read a bunch of her books during my college years and I have very fond memories surrounding her books. I have not read all of Francine Rivers books but pretty close to it, and whenever she releases a new book I am happy to buy it right away. Her last few books were not to my taste, but she is one of those authors that I just continue to read because I know I will still enjoy reading her books even if I don't love them like some of her older works.

The Masterpiece is Rivers newest book and I was thrilled to see that the blurb on the book said she was getting back to her roots with this book. Her classic books are known for being an epic story usually focused on two individuals that are truly in love but life and circumstances always come in the way and they need find out if their love is really worth all that life throws at them. The Masterpiece follows that same plot line and I loved it. This book is 484 pages and I read it in two days. Even for me, that is pretty fast for such a large volume. I was so absorbed in the story and wanted to keep reading. One of the things that resonated with me a ton was the fact that a lot of this book is written in my hometown. It was so cool to read about spots knew exacly where they were or have driven through. It was also very strange at the same time because where I grew up doesn't seem to be book worthy, but who knows maybe it's cooler than I ever knew as a college student.

This book is the typical girl meets boy, boy and girl have no interest in each other, girl and boy get to know each other, girl and boy find out there is more to one another then meets the eye, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl need to learn what love really is. Yep, I am going to stick with that sentence. But for those who need a bit more here is the synopsis from Amazon:

"A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want―money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman’s past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn’t know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist―an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison.

Like Roman, Grace is wrestling with ghosts and secrets of her own. After a disastrous marriage threw her life completely off course, she vowed never to let love steal her dreams again. But as she gets to know the enigmatic man behind the reputation, it’s as if the jagged pieces of both of their pasts slowly begin to fit together . . . until something so unexpected happens that it changes the course of their relationship―and both their lives―forever."

I enjoyed this book so much and was delighted to get the chance to read it. I got to read this book right when I needed it. After a long week, this somewhat predictable romance story kept me engaged and reminded me of all of the other books I really loved to read in college. Happy reading all around for me.

Trigger warnings, this book is Christian fiction and God is mentioned throughout the book. I don't mind this at all, but I do know some of you are not interested in reading Christian fiction so I wanted to give some of you readers a heads up.
