Review of Caroline - Little House, Revisited by Sarah Miller
Hello Readers,
My love for the Little House on the Prairie books runs very deep. I have very fond memories of waiting for 11:00 a.m. to come each day so I could turn the TV on and watch a re-run of the TV show. I had the entire Little House books on my shelf growing up. A beautiful vintage set that I loved seeing sitting on my shelf. I still have this set and love it so much. My mom threw each of her daughters a Little House on the Prairie themed birthday party. At each party we dressed in period clothing, made crafts that were fitting for Laura’s time, and had the best time debating who could pretend to be Mary, Laura, or Carrie. I always wanted to be Mary because I thought she was so pretty. Even though I always wanted to be Mary I usually ended up being given the role of Laura because we shared the same freckles and straight brown hair.
I was absolutely thrilled to find out that Caroline Little House, Revisited by Sarah Miller was being released. I couldn't wait to get the opportunity to be back on the prairie with such a beloved family of mine. Caroline is written solely from the perspective of “Ma”. For those of you have not read the Little House on the Prairie books you should know that they are written from the perspective of Laura Ingalls who is Carloine’s daughter. The Little House on the Prairie books begin when Laura is a very young girl and you get to read about what it was like to grow up and experience real life adventures on the Prairie. Caroline Little House, Revisited covers the journey the Ingalls family took in a covered wagon from the Big Woods in Wisconsin to a new life in Kansas’ Indian Territory. It was a huge journey that took months, and life in a wagon was not easy, especially for Caroline who was pregnant with their third child. Caroline had no friends or family to support her during this journey or to welcome her to her new home in Kansas. She was forced to pull on strength she did not know she had and make her new life in Kansas a home and survive life in the wild prairie of Kansas.
I can’t speak the praises of Caroline Little House, Revisited enough. It was beautifully written and transported me into the wagon that the Ingalls family was traveling in and then I was living in the house that Charles built for his family in Kansas. Feeling present in the story was completely due to Millers writing style and through her extensive research into the lives of the Ingalls family. Caroline’s character was a completely real and relatable. As I was reading the book I would just set it down and ponder the way Caroline handled a situation with her children or her husband. It was so wonderful that through a fiction book I was able to take away so many beautiful ways to approach and communicate with my own family.
I loved that Miller wrote Caroline in such a real and relatable way. She got frustrated with her children, husband, and at nature. She struggled to find ways to be an example to her small daughters and not disgrace herself. Caroline is a beautiful example of being a wife and mother. She willingly traveled hundreds of miles to unknown territory because she trusted her beloved husbands judgment and knew he would make a good life for his family in this completely foreign land.
I would highly recommend this book for fans of the Little House on the Prairie books but also for readers who enjoy a well written historical fiction novel.
